Summer is a busy time with trials and shows, as well as offering support through challenging and variable seasons. The growing season is a very valuable opportunity for us to learn through our science program, through observation and on-farm experience, and through the invaluable conversations with farmers and folks in trade. Using all these interactions, we can continue to bring forward our best varieties, products, and technical knowledge to positively contribute to the agricultural sector in the UK.

Welcome to final edition of BarTech 2021, our monthly newsletter from the Agricultural Grass Experts at Barenbrug UK. Autumn time presents an excellent opportunity to establish grass and multispecies swards. According to a recent AHDB survey, 66% of respondents are reseeding in autumn. Soaring fed prices are prompting increased interest from farmers in homegrown, with multispecies swards, forage brassica and other crop such as maize and lucerne taking the top spots. Plan ahead now for your autumn reseeding and post cereal crop harvests, not just for livestock feed but soil health, better harvest performance and improved soil drainage.

Homegrown, sustainable and environmental consideration will play a huge role- no matter what type of farm you run - soil health, water management, biodiversity and carbon storage will become even more valuable and grass, forage and herbal varieties, bred for purpose, for your grazing, your rotation and your crops will bring crucial benefits. Barenbrug’s grass and forage genetics provide British farms with practical agronomic and environmental gains.

Brassica crops are a useful tool for reseeding, they are not a host crop for leatherjackets making them particularly beneficial between permanent grass leys where high burdens of the pest can be found. As well as helping combat pest issues, brassicas help to reduce weed and disease burdens, create better soil conditions and cleaner seedbeds for establishing new swards of grass.

Silage 2021! Are you ready? Parts of the country are in full swing however in some, such as Northern Ireland, first cuts have been delayed due to cold weather affecting grass growth and prolonged rainfall pushing cutting dates back by at least 10 days. There is a temptation to revert from a three-cut system to taking two larger cuts of grass per year; there are pros and cons for both. Recent AFBI research proves that despite lower first cut yields a three-cut silage system is still more beneficial to make the very best high-quality silage. Find out more…

Grass can be a very useful crop to follow maize or cereals later in the year, providing soil stability and mopping up nutrients, as well as an overwintering feed source for livestock or an early silage crop in the following spring.
