Barenbrug Grower Update

Barenbrug Grower Update

Welcome

Welcome to the first Barenbrug Grower update. We are delighted to launch our new grower updates for the dedicated seed producers across the UK. We aim to share thoughts, tops tips and advice on seed production, from across the industry, helping to generate practical, agronomic and environmental gains.

As the Autumn sowing season comes to an end, we reflect on the immense efforts from all the teams involved in getting essential grass seed out to farmers, to grow to feed their livestock and support their crop, and to the turf managers across the UK maintaining the pristine courses, pitches and stadiums that are a vital part of so many people’s lives.

From the hard-working farmers across the UK growing the grass seed, delivery drivers ensuring the seed gets to the warehouses and mixing facilities, the operations teams blending and sorting the seed, the customer teams processing orders and dealing with enquiries, and sales teams, to our massive distributor network who look after the farmers, grounds managers and greenkeepers.

This season has been one the most challenging with 50 tonnes of seed delivered in just one day alone, that is enough seed for over 132 Premier League pitches!

Increasingly focused on sustainability, we are determined to minimise any negative impact on the environment while increasing the enjoyment of green spaces. Thank you for all your continued support.

Global Seed Production

The global position regarding harvest 2022 is a very mixed bag. The harvest season started in New Zealand, where one of the wettest harvests was recorded. Yields were hit dramatically, and harvest conditions were far from ideal with some crops being lost completely.

Canada and the USA have had a more fruitful harvest with growing conditions more favourable compared with the 2021 harvest. The European harvest has produced variable yield results throughout, yields in Holland and Denmark were high, mainly down to late spring rains bulking crops at the crucial time before heading whilst in France and the UK yields in some species were hit by drought and extreme heat.

Stocks in Europe have increased in species such as Italian and Hybrid Ryegrass mainly due to farmers choosing longer term options when choosing to re-seed. Low-grade amenity perennial ryegrass varieties have also begun building as the retail box trade market detracts after the pandemic.

To summarise, the Agricultural market is uncertain with changes to Agricultural Policies, high inflation and interest rates within the UK whereas the amenity market reamins more stable however, market growth could be restricted by reduced spend in the turf market and footfall falling at sporting venues as the cost of living crisis bites.
