Stubble turnips - Barkant

Barkant stubble turnips are a fast-establishing, high-performance forage option, delivering exceptional autumn and winter feed potential. This vigorous diploid turnip, bred by Barenbrug, boasts high leaf production, a purple tankard root, and superior sugar and dry matter content.

One of Barkant’s key advantages is its ability to be grazed multiple times, making it a versatile choice for livestock farmers. Both sheep and cattle thrive on turnips, and employing strip-grazing techniques helps maximise yield and maintain quality by reducing trampling and contamination.

Partnering for Success in Agriculture

In early 2024, Barenbrug UK proudly partnered with the Anglia Quality Meat Association (AQM), an organisation with over 50 years of expertise in the agricultural sector.

This collaboration underscores our commitment to supporting livestock producers in addressed challenges and enhancing productivity. With AQM’s in-depth knowledge and efficient services, we are confident in our ability to help farmers optimise their forage strategies.

AQM’s Experience with Barkant Stubble Turnips

AQM recently trialled Barenbrug UK’s Barkant stubble turnips on a Norfolk farm, using sheep for grazing. Their results were outstanding:

“On the same farm where other varieties were grown and farmed exactly the same way, Barkant has yielded up to 3x more than the other varieties have in terms of leaf and bulb size.

These stubble turnips have a really good quality leaf, but what has impressed me the most is the bulb size. The bulb size is important for us because we are wanting to finish our lambs on high energy fodder.

What has been really interesting, is that its winter hardiness has been exceptional; there has been plenty of food available for our sheep throughout January and now into February. Barkant also seems to have coped better with disease over the winter compared to the other varieties we have grown on the farm here.”
