Grass: The World's Most Important Crop

It may be hard to believe, but grass is arguably the most important crop on the planet—not just agriculturally, but economically and ecologically as well. Globally, grass makes up around 20% of all vegetation, and in the UK alone, over 40% of land is permanent grassland.

Although humans can’t digest grass, it plays a vital role in sustainable livestock production, serving as a key food source for grazing animals. Beyond agriculture, grass is essential to our everyday lives. It's used in sport, recreation, gardens, and public spaces, while also delivering valuable ecological benefits—from soil protection and carbon capture to supporting biodiversity.
